Founded in 1857, Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic Church has been a cornerstone of faith and education in Mascoutah, Illinois. With deep roots in the Catholic community, the church has served generations of families, providing spiritual guidance, education, and a strong sense of community.
Early Beginnings
Holy Childhood was established through the dedication and generosity of Mascoutah’s Catholic citizens. The first church, built from brick and timber, had a capacity of 60 families. As the congregation grew, the need for a larger space became evident.
In 1882, the original church was replaced by the beautiful, larger structure that still stands today. This expansion reflected the increasing Catholic population in Mascoutah and the surrounding areas.
The Birth of Holy Childhood School
Just two years after the church’s founding, parishioners recognized the importance of education and established Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic School. The school became a vital part of the community, providing faith-based education to local children.
Over the past 150+ years, Holy Childhood has continued to serve thousands of Catholics through faith, education, and service. The parish has thrived under the leadership of dedicated pastors, including its twelfth and current pastor, Reverend Nicholas Fleming.
Legacy and Community Impact
Holy Childhood remains a vital part of Mascoutah and the Belleville Diocese, offering worship services, religious education, and community outreach programs. With God’s grace, the parish continues its mission, ensuring that future generations can grow in faith and service.
