The History of Norton Theatre
Norton Theatre was a beloved entertainment venue in Mascoutah, Illinois, offering residents a place to enjoy movies and community events. Opened in March 1948, the theatre made a grand entrance with a lively celebration, featuring the Blue Jay Orchestra and a speech from the town’s mayor.
Grand Opening and Early Years
The theatre’s opening was a major event, complete with a giant searchlight illuminating the entrance, creating an exciting atmosphere for moviegoers. Over the years, Norton Theatre became a staple of Mascoutah’s social scene, hosting weekly movie screenings and serials, including classic cowboy films that kept audiences coming back for more.
Community Engagement and Events
Beyond movies, Norton Theatre played a role in local events, including hosting the Miss Frontier Scholarship Pageant, a preliminary contest for the Miss Kansas pageant. The theatre was a gathering place for families and friends, offering entertainment and a shared cultural experience.
Restoration and Legacy
In 1992, the theatre was purchased by the Norton Theatre Association, founded by Alberta Byrum-Slaby and Sara Lee Hartley. A series of fundraisers and restoration efforts helped bring the theatre back to life, reopening in May 1993 with the support of volunteers from Mascoutah and surrounding communities.
Though Norton Theatre has changed over the years, its legacy remains a cherished part of Mascoutah’s history. Residents fondly recall Saturday movie nights and the excitement of seeing new films on the big screen.
